Vacation and Writing: The Big Compromise

Writing on vacation hasn’t been something I’ve done before. I usually try to pack as light as I can so the laptop is one of the items that remains behind.

A thought popped in to my head. I have done some writing. I have journaled about our trips.

The journaling helps me remember what we did, what we saw, and where we ate. Usually the journaling becomes a part of a small scrapbook about the trip.

Writing goals on vacation

As I sit here in the Florida room in my parents’ new place in Sebring, Fla., I am writing on the laptop that normally remains at home.

I gave in and brought it because I’m behind in my writing goals for the year. I belong to the 10 Minute Novelists on Facebook, and I’m doing a writing challenge this year.

I’m in the lowest group, but I still need to write 274 words a day.

And I’m behind. I wasn’t sure what the WiFi situation would be so I hoped to catch up with my writing.

So here I am, trying my best to write some blog posts and prepare for Camp NaNoWriMo.

I didn’t set any particular writing goals while I’m on vacation other than to write as much as I can and try to catch up.

Since I don’t normally write like this on vacation, I wasn’t sure whether I set goals.

Writing inspiration on vacation

I was hoping the change of scenery would inspire me, but I need the beach. The orange grove behind me isn’t helping me with inspiration as much as I would like.

Of course, my lack of focus could play a part in this, too.

I have had too many things on my mind lately, and that has played a role in being behind with my writing.

I shouldn’t use that as excuse not to write, though, just like I shouldn’t use being on vacation as an excuse. If I want to write even a little bit, I should do it.

On the other hand, I can’t let it consume me while on vacation. I can write in the mornings before my son gets up and in the evenings when we’re sitting here relaxing.

Part of being a writer is writing so I must push on through and make the best of it.

Here I am pushing on through. I’ve taken all morning to write this blog post, but I’ve had interruptions. The good part is I have almost finished writing this post.

I haven’t done a great job of posting weekly to either of my blogs, but I’m going to do better. I have to be better if I want to build my author platform.

Here I am doing some much needed writing on my third day of vacation. I’ve written in one morning what my goal is for two days.

If only I can write at least that much every day, then I would be caught up in no time.

I will keep enjoying my vacation time and write as much as I can while I’m away from home and see how close I can get back to my goal.

What do you like to do with your free time while on vacation? Do you read, nap, or do something else?
