Dogs in romance novels, Jessie and Belle sleeping in their beds

Why Dogs are in My Romance Novels

Hello, Friend,

Right now, as I’m typing this, Jessie and Belle are both curled up on their beds next to my desk. These two bring me so much joy every single day. They’re my constant companions, my writing buddies, and I can’t imagine my life without them. They’re also the reason dogs in romance novels—especially mine—are so important to me.

So it’s probably no surprise that dogs show up in every single one of my Sunrise Beach romances. Let me share why.

Dogs Understand What We Need

When you’re writing about characters in their 40s and 50s, you’re writing about people who’ve lived full lives. They’ve experienced loss, heartbreak, disappointment, and change. And dogs get that. They offer love and comfort without asking questions about your past or judging your choices.

In my stories, dogs provide the kind of companionship that helps my characters heal and open their hearts again. There’s something wonderful about a character who’s been hurt finding comfort in a loyal four-legged friend. That bond creates space for them to trust again—and eventually, to love again.

The Perfect Icebreaker

Dogs in romance novels are natural icebreakers. How many conversations have you started because someone stopped to pet your dog? Or because your dog decided to say hello to a stranger at the park?

Dogs in romance novels are perfect for creating meet-cute moments, and they are perfect for creating them. A tangled leash at the beach, a runaway pup who leads two people together, or a shared laugh over doggy antics—these moments feel real because they happen in everyday life.

Comic Relief and Love

Romance should make you feel a range of emotions, and dogs bring both the laughter and the tender moments. They knock things over at the worst possible time. They steal food off the counter. They give you that head-tilt look that melts your heart.

But they also sense when you need comfort. They curl up beside you on hard days. They remind you that even in the midst of change and uncertainty, there’s still joy and love in the world.

Meet Boomer

In Returning Home, you meet Boomer, a tan Chihuahua who comes into Marsha’s life at exactly the right time. After leaving a bad relationship, Marsha rescues Boomer, and in many ways, he rescues her right back.

Boomer might be small, but he’s got a huge personality. He’s fiercely loyal to Marsha, and he provides both protection and comfort as she returns to Sunrise Beach and faces her past.

I won’t spoil what happens, but if you’re a dog person, I hope you’ll fall in love with Boomer. And if you’re not a dog person, Boomer might just change your mind.

New Beginnings Have Four Legs

Dogs in romance novels fit naturally into stories about second chances. Many of my characters are starting over—new town, new chapter, new possibility for love. And often, there’s a dog by their side representing that fresh start.

Dogs live in the moment. They don’t dwell on yesterday’s mistakes or worry about tomorrow’s uncertainties. They remind us that every day is a new beginning, full of potential for walks, treats, belly rubs, and adventure.

That’s the energy I want in my Sunrise Beach romances. Yes, my characters have pasts, baggage, and complicated histories. But they also have hope, possibility, and the courage to try again—just like the dogs who accompany them on their journeys.

Why It Matters

Belle and Jessie have taught me so much about love, living in the present, and finding joy in simple moments. Those lessons show up in every book I write.

If you’re a dog lover looking for dogs in romance novels, I think you’ll recognize that special bond in my stories. You’ll see your own furry companion in the dogs who trot through the pages of Sunrise Beach. And hopefully, you’ll fall in love with them, too.

Now I’d love to hear from you: Do you have a dog? Tell me about them in the comments—I want to know their name, breed, and personality!

Your friend,

Michele
