Did March zip by, or was it just me? I feel like we just started the month, and now here it is the first of April already.
March proved a productive month for my writing. It wasn’t so much my own writing as some freelancing I’ve picked up. It certainly is helping with my budget. About darn time.
If you’ve followed me for very long, you know I’ve been through some rough times. I’m glad to see things are finally looking up for me. I can only hope things stay that way.
Freelancing gig
Last month I shared how I got these two gigs. Well, I hate to say it, but one of them didn’t work out as I hoped. The one ghostwriting books wasn’t at all what I thought it would be. Being sick and having that zap my creativity didn’t help either.
I finally told the gal I’d “interviewed,” if you can call it that, with that I would have to pass on this. I hated to do that because I enjoyed the writing.
But it was taking me too long to write a chapter for little pay. I’m sure you’ve been, or know someone who has been, in a job where it wasn’t worth your time for the pay. This job was it for me.
The other gig is paying me pretty good. I can’t say too much about it here other than I’m doing some content writing.
When I first started, I had some problems getting the writing just right. I thought I was doing it right, but I was making a few mistakes.
Even a month later, I still have to redo one here and there, but at least I can see the progress I’ve made.
As any freelance writer should do, I’m continuing to look for at least one more job that I can do. I want to make sure I always have at least a couple of decent ones.
I’ve learned in the past that I can’t always depend upon one job. It can be jerked away from me at any time.
My own writing
This past week was spring break for me so I spent a few hours working on edits for a short story for an anthology. When I sent it to the person in charge of the anthology, I thought it was decent.
Little did I know, the story wasn’t as good as I thought. I had some pretty heavy editing to do. Of course, I’ve never had a developmental edit done on my books because I couldn’t afford it.
By the time I sent it back to the gal, a good feeling flowed through my body. I’m glad I let her do the editing so I could see how to improve my writing. I mean, free editing is a great thing!
Camp NaNo
Camp NaNoWriMo is this month, and I had hopes to write at least 10k words on a new novel, but I don’t know if that will happen or not. I didn’t get an outline done this last week in March as I had planned.
But that doesn’t mean I’ve failed yet. Not by any means.
I could probably not even start for another week and still get those 10k words by the end of the month.
For Camp, I had planned to use a pre-made cover I had bought on sale for inspiration to write a young adult contemporary romance. However, after my short story, I don’t think I’m cut out to write romance.
I know I keep changing my mind about what I want to write, but that’s part of being an author—figuring out what kind of writing is best.
So, I’m thinking about realistic fiction with some romance thrown in. Would you read it? Think about Jodi Picoult with some romance, but for young adults.
I’ve even been throwing around some ideas for middle grade books. I don’t know why, but that age group is appealing to me.
I hope you had a good March and a good Easter. I look forward to seeing spring arrive in the next month—hopefully by the time you read the next update from me.
